Medical Debt

Money image3 in 5 Tennesseans are struggling with medical debt they did not seek.

Unlike choosing to buy new shoes or charging a trip to Hawaii when you don't have the funds, medical debt happens because of human need in obtaining life-sustaining and life-saving care. Medical debt is involuntary and is hurting many Tennesseans—uninsured & insured alike—who simply cannot afford the steep costs of essential medical security.

Tennessee ranks #1 in personal bankruptcies. This alarming statistic is not so surprising when you consider that half of all personal bankruptcies are due to medical debt. With 1 in 6 Tennnessee's being chronically uninsured and 1 in 3 being uninsured for at least part of the year, more than a million people and hundreds of thousands of families are struggling to get and afford health care coverage.

The only thing embarrassing about medical debt is the health care system that causes it.

You are not alone. If you’re struggling with access to care and medical debt, help change the unfair system by being part of a free, confidential survey being conducted by the Tennessee Health Care Campaign (THCC).
